Swedish Nuclear Industry on High Alert after Explosives Found on Truck

Sweden produces about 50 percent of its electricity from nuclear sources. It has ten reactors, four of which are based at eh Ringhals power plant, 45 miles south of the nation’s second largest city, Gothenburg.

Yesterday afternoon, during a routine check by security staff of the Ringhals facility, bomb sniffer dogs detected explosives in an industrial area within the plant’s enclosure.

Gösta Larsen, of the Ringhals plant, confirmed that a package the size of a “small fist” and explained that “under the first step onto the truck there is a fire extinguisher and that is where the explosive had been placed.”

Tommy Nyman, of the local police, said that the driver of the truck was unaware of the package and is not suspected of being involved. He said “an outsider has obviously placed them on the truck. 'We're talking to the truck driver and are trying to map out her movements within the premises throughout the day.”

The package was sent to the National Laboratory of Forensic Science in Linköping, where it was confirmed to be an explosive; however the resulting explosion would not have been big enough to cause any serious damage to the site.
