Radioactive Fish off Fukushima Coast
A short 20 kilometers off the coast of the Fukushima nuclear plant, Japan’s electricity utility has discovered fish containing a level of radiation unsafe for consumption, Japanese news agencies reported.
Record-high levels of radioactive cesium were found in fish tested from off the coast of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant. Scientists found 25,800 bequerels per kilogram of cesium 134 and cesium 137 in the fish.
In a statement carried by Kyodo News agency from Tokyo Electric Power Co., the latest tests on fish showed higher levels than fish cherry salmon tested earlier.
In May 2011, the government of Japan halted all shipments of fish from waters off Fukushima. Other areas are also undergoing continual testing of fish for high radiation levels.
In the wake of the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the Fukushima nuclear plant released dangerous amounts of radioactive substances into the air and ocean after reactor meltdowns, devastating fishing and farming communities in the region.
