Korea, France to Hold Seminar on Nuclear Power Promotion

Seeking to quell legislators’ unease about nuclear power in the wake of Japan’s 11 March Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, on 21 October the Korea Nuclear Energy Promotion Agency will co-host with the French Atomic Forum a seminar and series of workshops to raise awareness of nuclear power at South Korea’s National Assembly.

The Korea Nuclear Energy Promotion Agency expect about 100 government officials to attend the seminar, Seoul’s The Korea Herald newspaper reported.

Korea Nuclear Energy Promotion Agency officials said that the seminar will mainly focus on the challenge of nuclear power policies and ways to obtain greater public acceptance of expanding the nation’s nuclear program.

The total electrical generation capacity of the nuclear power plants of South Korea is 18.5 gigawatt hours produced by 21 reactors, providing 29.5 percent of South Korea's total electrical generation capacity, but 45 percent of South Korea’s total electrical consumption.

Korea Nuclear Energy Promotion Agency chairman Rhee Jae-hwan and French Atomic Forum chairman Philippe Garderet are slated to address the seminar about the deepening cooperation between their organizations. In March Rhee and Garderet signed a memorandum of understanding on the promotion of nuclear safety.

Since its establishment in 1992 the Korea Nuclear Energy Promotion Agency has continuously worked on advancing nuclear energy.
