Footage Surfaces Of Orlando Shooter Badmouthing BP Oil Spill Cleanup Team

Video footage has surfaced from 2010 showing Orlando shooter Omar Mateen badmouthing cleanup crews in the Gulf of Mexico following BP’s catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The footage of Mateen is part of an award-winning 2012 documentary The Big Fix, which details events surrounding the cleanup in the wake of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mateen, who was responsible for last week’s Orlando shootings was, at the time, working as a security guard on the beach during cleanup efforts. Mateen had worked several security guard jobs until he was fired in 2013 after boasting to coworkers of his ties to Hezbollah and Al Qaeda.

Mateen’s portion of the documentary, captured by hidden camera, shows embittered Omar Mateen ranting not about the spill itself, but about the workers¬ who were engaged in clean-up efforts.

The National Response Team, which was comprised of multiple government agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and more, was responsible for coordinating the cleanup.

Mateen is on camera for roughly 40 seconds of the video. In full security-guard garb, Mateen is shown responding to an inquiry as to whether any of the workers involved in the cleanup might be available for comment.

“No one gives a shit here. Everyone is just out to get paid,” said Mateen.

He went on to say that the clean-up crew was just hoping for “more oil to- come out” so that they’ll have jobs. “They want more disaster to happen, because that’s where the money-making is,” Mateen adds.

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill of 2010—the result of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion—represents the largest marine oil spill in history. The resulting oil slick covered thousands of square miles and polluted 1,100 miles of shoreline.
