Romania’s Nuclear Power Plant Experiencing Technical Issues

Romanian government officials said that the country's Cernavoda nuclear power plant second reactor unit was closed due to "technical" issues for 36 hours, starting the evening of 16 September.

The Cernavoda nuclear power plant is Romania's sole civilian nuclear power station generating electricity.

The state-run Societatea Na?ionala Nuclearelectrica SA power company stated in a press release that the closure was necessary to correct an equipment failure, adding that were no problems protecting personnel, equipment or the environment during the shutdown and that all security systems operated normally.

National Society Nuclearelectrica stated that the shutdown was scheduled for the weekend when energy consumption is lower, so as not to affect the balance in the national energy system and that after tests are conducted, the reactor will be brought back online The intervention was scheduled during the weekend, when energy consumption is lower, so as not to affect the balance in the national energy system, Romania's Financiarul reported.

Sources familiar with the site speaking off the record said only that the halt is not related to the record low levels of the Danube River, which provides the nuclear power plant with its coolant water.
